Student work at Art Camp

For 2024 Silk Painting - instructor Laura Chamberlin

Come join Laura Chamberlin for an afternoon of “Introduction to Silk Painting”. Together we will use silk dyes, paints, resists, salts, and other supplies to create beautiful, fun textile art.

Laura hasn’t yet settled on exactly what pieces of fabric we will be painting – could be a scarf or other-shaped piece of silk. Or, you may want to bring your own item to paint.

You may want to participate in more than one of her workshops, to have ample time to create a beautiful silk work of art.

All materials will be provided

If you have a solid color silk scarf that is suitable, it could be the perfect background.

Laura has been involved in Art Camp 4 Grown-ups and Camp de Benneville Pines for many years. Some of you know her as camp’s previous registrar, others might remember her a workshop leader, teaching Silk Painting, back in 2015 and 2016. She’s very excited to be a leading Silk Painting workshops again this year.

Her journey with silk painting began many, many years ago when her older sister fell in love with a hand-painted Christian Dior wedding gown. Needless to say, the family couldn’t afford it and her mom said “That’s okay, Laura can do it!” This was way before the advent of Google, so off she went to the local library and got a book. That was the start of her love for this medium.

Literally, once her brush touched the silk, she was entranced by the magic of the silk’s translucence. The vibrancy of color, the flow of the inks or paints can mesmerize both the artist and the viewer.
