Camp Check-in: Thurs. 11:00 am - 12:00 noon

(or Wed. between 3:30 to 4:30, for those arriving a day early.)

TRAVEL:

Many attendees come from across the US and California by air and driving. We have a tight window for arrival and check-in and ask that all attendees arrive between 11:00 and 12:00 noon on Thursday for smooth check-in, to respect staff and so we can start on time.

Please plan well and check your drive-times in the days before arrival, and allow for traffic.

It is suggested that those who are flying arrive in Southern CA, on Wed and check into camp between 3:30-4:30 on Wed. so you have time to relax and not be rushed on Thurs. Other options are suggested below.

GETTING TO CAMP

We are located in the San Bernardino National Forest at 6800 feet, 7 miles south of Big Bear Lake, as the eagle flies.

San Diego and Los Angeles are about 3-4 hour drives.
Orange County is about 2+

Please plan ahead for traffic and other delays. Check your drive time on Google Maps, or your car’s navigation in the days ahead.

We encourage everyone to be on time for check-in, so please plan for traffic and have a reliable estimate of your travel time.

Plan in extra time to pick up lunch for Thursday, to get gas, and anything else you need.

Driving directions will be in your Camper Packet in August.

Flying + Driving

If you fly, the following airports are available:

You must make your own arrangements for driving to camp from the airport. Options:

  • Car Rental: for 6-7 days. (Recommended)

  • Car Pooling:

    • Request car pool on your registration. No guarantees.

    • Registrar provides contact info of campers who have stated they might be available. It is up to you to make arrangements.

    • Camp is not responsible, and assumes no liability, if car pooling arrangements do not work out.

  • Come with a friend! Take advantage of the Bring a Friend Discount and ride!

  • Ride App: Ride Share apps like Uber or Lyft may an option but could be expensive and some drivers may not want to drive to a remote location.


Strategies for planning flying & driving when you have figured out your driving method above. Be sure you leave enough driving time to arrive between 3:30 - 4:30 on Wed. or 11:00-12:00 on Thurs.

Option 1: Fly Wednesday—a day before camp begins. Drive Thurs.

  • Spend the night near your airport and get up early

  • Ride up to camp on Thursday morning

  • Stop to buy lunch to eat at camp. No lunch is served on Thurs. Dinner will be the first meal.

  • Arrive between 11 and noon on Thurs. (Please read driving section and calculate ample driving time to avoid traffic and arrive on time.) Punctuality is necessary and appreciated.


Option 2: Fly Wednesday early, drive to Camp arriving Wed. between 3:30-4:30 pm

  • Register for Early Arrival at Camp ($40 extra)

  • Take an early morning flight or a red-eye

  • Land at your airport between 10 and noon (please see driving times above for your airport)

  • Based on your method of driving transport chosen above, plan your

  • On the way, stop to buy an easy dinner, breakfast, and lunch (refrigerators and microwaves are available. Coffee, tea, cocoa, and artesian water are always available.) The first meal served at camp is Thurs. dinner, and there are no restaurants or stores nearby.

  • Arrive between 3:30 and 4:30. Punctuality is necessary and appreciated.

  • Check in and settle into your peaceful Mountain Cabin to start unwinding and exploring!



Option 3: Fly in on Thursday (not recommended)

  • Take a red-eye

  • Land by 6-7am (allow for rush hour traffic from your airport)

  • Buy take-out lunch at the airport

  • Ride/Drive up to camp on Thursday morning

  • Arrive at camp on Thursday between 11 and noon (please be punctual - both necessary and appreciated)

  • Check in and settle into your peaceful Mountain Cabin to start your Art Retreat! There will not be time for a nap!



Art Camp officially starts promptly at 2pm on Thursday

  • 2pm - Orientation (mandatory)

  • 3pm - First Intensive Class

  • 6pm - Dinner

  • 7pm - Camper Show & Tell of their art (‘til about 8:15pm)
